The Red Wattle hog is noted for its wattles, fleshy appendages which hang on each side of the neck. Their color can range from red to almost black. The hair is usually straight and fairly thick. They will get to a butcher weight of 225 – 275 at 6 – 7 months of age depending on their environment. The Red Wattle can mature to 650 – 800 pounds and be as tall as 4 feet and 8 feet long. Some RWs have weighed in as much as 1200 pounds.
Red Wattle hogs are known for hardiness and foraging activity. They can be raised in a wide variety of environments, anything from pens to pasture and woods. Red Wattles adapt to a wide range of climates. They produce a lean meat that has been described as rich and tender. The sows are excellent mothers, farrow litters of 8 – 14 piglets, and provide good quantities of milk for the piglets. They are usually mild mannered.
